Towards the end of July, pop artist Taylor Swift completely cleared all of her social media platforms. Fans flew into confusion and excitement; last time she did this she dropped a new single and announced a new album. Hungering for more, fans have not gotten any new music since Swift last released 1989 in October of 2014. Soon after clearing all of her accounts, she posted several videos on Instagram of a snake, which was used against her in a feud, then finally posted about her new single Look What You Made Me Do, and her new album, reputation. Shortly after, she released the song in iTunes and the lyric video on YouTube.

The internet exploded. Fans immediately found symbolism in the lyrics and video, which got over thirty million views in twenty-four hours. There were many theories circulating all media platforms, but one thing all fans agree on is this: the song is a response to all of her feuds. In the past three years, Taylor has fought with Katy Perry about a backup dancer, and Kanye West about his song that references her in its lyrics. Regardless the reason, Taylor was obviously debuting a new, edgier version of herself in Look What You Made Me Do. With lyrics like, “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh! Cause she’s dead!” , fans knew there was a new beginning for the star.

Aside from that, Swift then dropped …Ready For It only a week later, and people were drawing comparisons between it a Wildest Dreams from her album 1989 The themes are very similar, but ...Ready For It has symbolism that listeners quickly dug out. At the beginning of the song, Swift clears her throat, something that fans claim is her way to signal that this album is a statement, or explains something she wants to tell. Either way, surely this album will be very different from her past work, and she really is determined to change her image – or her reputation.
