Having a class pet can be an exciting and enriching experience for both students and teachers alike. A vote was taken and “Yes” was the majority, followed by only one “no”.
After surveying the students, principal, and teachers at North Star, it is clear that the majority were in favor of getting a class pet. The hamster emerged as the favorite, with its cute and cuddly appearance winning over many hearts.
As Maddy M from 5th grade. put it, “Absolutely yes we must get a class pet and I love hamsters we should get those! I would not want to get a turtle because you can’t pet them and they are not furballs like hamsters.”
One of the biggest benefits of having a class pet is the opportunity for hands-on learning. For example, if the class is studying hamsters, they would have a living and breathing pet to observe up close. Hamsters are also relatively easy to care for and do not require much space or special accommodations.
However, there are some downsides to consider as well. Hamsters have a relatively short lifespan compared to other pets, typically only living 2-4 years. They can also be aggressive if not handled properly and may bite if startled or frightened. Additionally, they produce a lot of waste which can lead to unpleasant odors in the classroom.
Despite these potential drawbacks, there are still many reasons why having a hamster as a class pet could be a great choice. Did you know that there are actually around 20 different species of hamsters? Some popular ones include the Golden Hamster, Teddy Bear Hamster, Black Bear Hamster, and Panda Bear Hamster. With so much variety to explore and learn about, it’s no wonder that so many people are excited about the possibility of bringing a hamster into their classroom!
