Do you ever want to bring a phone or a smartwatch to school? If you said yes, then keep reading. There is a new tech policy that says you can’t bring smartwatches, phones or anything that connects to the wifi to school. This is because RCSD said that kids were going on their phone during school and they would interrupt the class. We interviewed multiple kids and most said that they don’t like the policy.
Some kids said that they at least wanted to bring a fitness tracker. They also said that it is unreasonable and it has been affecting other students “They monitor your every move ”said 5th grader Isaac.
The policy says that all electronic devices, including smartwatches, are not allowed in class. This is a significant change from last year, when students could wear any type of smartwatch all year, except for State Testing. 4th grader Bella said, “I want to wear my watch so I can keep in contact with my parents.” Others have said that they want to wear fitness trackers.
The tech policy also talks about what will happen if kids break the rules, either on their Chromebooks or with their personal electronics. These include getting electronics taken away, or having to set up a meeting with their teachers or the principal. Scholars have also said that their parents were too busy to pick up their phones or apple watches from the office when they get taken away, meaning that they can go weeks without any of their electronics. Because of this, kids got really frustrated when they couldn’t bring the electronics to school, so their parents got really upset.
However, others are not so affected. “Most of the teachers have not implemented the full policy,” said 8th grader Ayla.
In conclusion, while many kids are upset about the tech policy and argue that kids should be able to collect electronics from the office without parents, the district seems steadfast in their new rules. What do you think of the new tech policy?
