Thoughts on the War in Gaza

The war in the Gaza Strip between Palestine and Israel has been going on for decades. When Israel was founded in 1948, many Palestinians were moved, some forcibly, to refugee camps in the Gaza Strip.  Hamas, a terror group that rules the Gaza Strip, wants to get rid of all the Israelis.

In October, they crossed the border and massacred over 1200 Israelis.  Over 240 people were taken hostage and only 85 of them have been released.

The Gaza Strip is sandwiched between the Mediterranean Ocean on one side and Israel on the other. The Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are mostly Muslims which and they want the land back.  The vow to clear the land of all Israelis “from the River to the sea.”

Israel has retaliated to the October 7th massacre with a massive bombing attack which has killed more than 22,000 Palestineans.  Most building have been destroyed, there are no functioning hospitals, no water and very little food. This is having a great impact – even here in North Star.

One NSA student has family in Israel The student worried that the United States would become more involved which could spark World War III. This student also thinks that the recent escalation of the situation was caused by illegal transportation of firearms into the Gaza Strip.

One student says she fears that the U.S. will charge Israel with interest for helping them with materials. The student also says that the U.S. might be attacked and later actions would spiral into WWIII. That student has a similar accusation to another student that the war has become very big recently because of illegal transportation into the Gaza Strip.

Lucas in 7th grade says he is struggling with his family. He states that since the U.S. has a lot of resources, they should help more and both sides of the people are treated poorly.

Vice principal; Havey had some thoughts on the subject. He stated that he is not directly affected by the war at hand but that he is emotionally aware of what is happening. He repeated in the interview that he “…values all human life.” Havey added that the U.S. should not repeat what they did in 2001 in reaction to the 9/11 attacks, which he states was inappropriate.

The Gaza war is real, and everyone should be aware of it. Thousands of precious human lives have been lost. It is harsh but we should all be working together to fix what has happened.
